Matthew Adgate Historical Marker to be Unveiled

For immediate release: The Anderson Falls Heritage Society warmly invites the public to attend the unveiling of a new historic roadside marker honoring Matthew Adgate on Saturday, May 15, 2021. The unveiling is scheduled for 10:00 AM at the Ausable Chasm Cemetery on Chasm Road near the intersection with State Route 9. The marker was generously funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation’s Historic Roadside Marker Grant Program. Local historian and author, Don Wickman, will speak briefly about Adgate’s life.

Matthew Adgate was born in 1737 in Connecticut and died in 1818 at his home in Ausable Chasm. He was an early supporter of the cause for American independence and helped draft the first New York State Constitution.  After the war Adgate served as a New York State Assemblyman, County Judge, and Delegate to the 1788 New York State Convention to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

The event will be held outside (rain or shine) and will last less than thirty minutes. No seating or restrooms will be provided. Attendees are invited to bring chairs if desired. Per state and local health department requirements all attendees over two years of age, who are not medically exempt, must wear a face covering and maintain a distance of at least six feet from any other non-household attendee.

The Anderson Falls Heritage Society Heritage House Museum is located at 96 Clinton Street, Keeseville and  is a 501c3 organization.
